About The Artist
Born in New York in 1930, Noel
Schweig’s prolific photography career began as a teenage hobby. His avocation
became a serious artistic pursuit beginning at age 24 when he attended medical
school in The Netherlands. He travelled and worked extensively to capture
native faces and places on photographic journeys around the world, which he then
exhibited and placed in private collections and sold in the Madison Street
Gallery located in Middleburg during 1989 and 1990. The photographs that
comprise many selections in this special exhibit are from Noel’s recent forays
into the exquisite Blue Ridge areas of Central Virginia.
Since Dr. Schweig regards himself as “technologically challenged,” he has only recently entered the digital age and abandoned film entirely. This transition has allowed him to process his own images, taken with Leica equipment, through the initial processes of editing and printing and to experience the results both on metallic and fine art Hannemuhl papers that comprise a significant part of this exhibit.
His eye habitually focuses on beautiful aspects of the ordinary in daily life. His photography emphasizes textures, shapes, and colors of that which are usually taken for granted: bark, stone, leaves, frost, fog, and water. The places and trappings of country life are singled out for special appreciation. This exhibit represents the culmination of the last two years inspired by his recent explorations of the Blue Ridge area which he calls “home.”
Dr. Schweig is a graduate of Duke University Medical School. He has been a psychotherapist and psychoanalyst since 1961 and a Middleburg resident since 1987. He divides his time between Middleburg and Wintergreen, VA and lives with his wife, Lois Vitt, and their three dogs.
